France was the epitome of success at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia not only because the team lifted the trophy, but also because it set a couple of new records, listed in the infographic below by bettingsites.me.uk.
However, this tournament wasn’t just about them. Other teams also had accomplishments of either reaching new levels in the tournament, having the highest scores, or by upsetting the bigger teams.
For example, Croatia, the runners-up, managed to reach the World Cup final for the first time with the best attack and defense in the competition. Meanwhile, England managed to both reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1990 and to also have its captain Harry Kane win the prestigious Golden Boot after scoring the most goals at the tournament (6).
The second most exciting team to watch at this year’s tournament was Belgium. It was playing high-paced attacking football, so it was no surprise that it became the top scoring team at the tournament with 16 goals.
Belgium’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made 27 saves which made him the top goalkeeper in the tournament. Moreover, the team held the longest unbeaten run at the tournament of 23 matches just before France beat it.
Even Russia, the least glorified team at the Cup, did reinforce the reason why football is called ‘a game of surprises’ when it beat traditional football giants Spain for the first time in 27 years. It even later reached the quarterfinals for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
