TastyPlacement’s most recent study sets out to see if Negative SEO is a real threat to a small business’ website. They experimented by buying thousands of links and directing them at one of their own sites. The site had not received any promotion in the past year and its primary keyword was ranking well (#3 in Google). A month was all it took to drive the site off the first page.
