Tightly binding a story with redemption, ambition and music the story begins on a promising note. We are starting from a distant future where Magik used to be a popular band. Today ‘Magik’ band finds itself once again scattered among its band members – with one striving to redeem himself and another subdued with mediocrity amidst richness (Arjun Rampal’s character). During this you meet Jiah Sharma (Shraddha Kapoor) who is a singer only by passion – until discovered by Adi.
The staggering story of the protagonists creates a munch-worthy view till the end.
Adi’s (Farhan Akhtar) life on one hand is filled with luxuries and riches. On the other hand he is desperately trying to soul search in the relief camp of Meghalaya (which is also notorious for being the ‘Rock capital of India’) while his wife stays in a penthouse in Mumbai with their son.
It is only after a fire destroys Adi’s house that he returns to Mumbai. But this time will he bring another budding star with him? Fate reunites him with his old band members as they begin their journey once again.
Hence begins the musical journey of the trio from ‘Magik’. Will they be able to achieve their passions once again? Of course this time they are joined with an equally passionate vagabond that is Jiah.
Together they explore the dark insides of reality TV shows, tell the tale of production houses and music clubs (reality show judges). The story consistently strives to reach out beyond music and into the dark worlds where musicians often struggle to make a mark.
Farhan Akhtar is back with a bang with his equally intense and dedicated performance. However what will hold your attention till the end is the soulful voice of Jiah (Shraddha Kapoor) and Adi (Farhan Akhtar). The duo has made it possible to create history with their vocal chords.
When we talk about acting, Purab and Arjun deliver the goods with some riveting scenes. Purab’s voice is somehow soothing to the viewer considering it is him who narrates the events of the film. While the most of the film deals with the seriousness portrayed by Farhan and Arjun, it is Purab who gives us a little bit of comic relief, and we love him for that.
The second half of the film is where the groove really begins. It feels as if the first half was just a buildup when the movie begins after interval. Once it begins, there’s bang –bang everywhere. The music, the performances, coupled with Farhan and Shraddha’s voices take over and you are left floating in a different Universe – a musical one.
