When you are making a research paper, your teacher or professor can ask you to make an abstract for this work. If you want to fulfill this assignment successfully, then you have to understand why you should write the abstract and its main goals.

The abstract is a short part of work that usually contains around 200-300 words. Here is the main information that you should put into this paper:

  1. The main goal of your work.
  2. The way how you have organized your study.
  3. Results that you have found during your research work.
  4. A brief summary.

There are 4 main types of the abstract:

  • Critical: it provides the reader with a researcher’s opinion about their study’s reliability, importance, and validity. Such paper’s length is around 400-500 words. This type is rarely used by writers.
  • Descriptive: provides the readers about the information the researcher has found in the work. This paper doesn’t contain any judgments about the study, but only includes a brief summary of the research paper. This type pf paper is usually very short, around 100 words or even less.
  • Informative: this abstracts describes your research work, providing readers with purpose, methods and results of your study. This type of abstract can contain author’s recommendations. Usually this paper is around 300 words length.
  • Highlight: this abstract turns the reader’s attention to the research paper. This type of work is used rarely because actually it can’t be independent from the entire research paper.

How to write an abstract: 10 easy steps

Writing the abstract may seem a difficult task, but we want to provide you with ten simple steps that will help you to create a successful work without wasting a lot of time:

  1. Start writing the abstract only when the entire work is finished.
  2. Re-read your research paper’s Introduction and Conclusion, and write the main hypotheses from those paragraphs.
  3. Pick up the key phrases from the Methods part.
  4. Write the main results from the Results part.
  5. Arrange the information from steps 2 – 4 into a single part.
  6. Make sure this paper doesn’t include:
  • new facts that were not presented into your research paper;
  • citations or discussion of literature;
  • details that are not very important to provide them in the abstract;
  • undefined abbreviations.
  1. If you have found any information listed in step 6, remove it.
  2. Make sure that you have got a logical and well-structured paper.
  3. Check if your abstract meets the main guidelines and requirements given by your teacher or professor.
  4. Revise your research paper abstract; check and correct logical and grammar errors to make your work look professional.
